Mesothelioma can be termed as a silent killer that lies in wait for ten to twenty years in your body before finally making its mark and causing fatal results. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer form that has an impact on the mesothelium. It is so rare in nature that many people are not even aware of its symptoms. Talking about mesothelium, it is basically a protective lining that deals with the internal organs of the body and abdomen. Although, mesothelium covers every organs but its main emphasis is on the heart and lungs.
The disease is contracted through a method commonly known as asbestos exposure. With regard to asbestos, it is one of the commonly used building materials in the US. As asbestos can have a negative impact on the overall health of people, there is no surprise that asbestos had been banned by the government. After the initial asbestos fibers exposure, mesothelioma symptoms can lie dormant for more than thirty years.
Mesothelioma is regarded as a silent killer for a reason. Until it reaches the advanced stages, you are not going to find any symptoms. The disease remains inactive inside your body for a long period of time and then all of a sudden, mesothelioma makes its presence felt in the mesothelium. Because of this, mesothelioma is almost always fatal. According to recent research, more than 75 percent of the people who have mesothelioma symptoms die within six months with the remaining 25 percent a year later.
There are two main kinds of mesothelioma, namely, pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma represents more than 70 percent of all mesothelioma cases. Some of the symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are chronic coughing and difficulty in breathing. Pleural mesothelioma can go undiagnosed for a long period of time because its symptoms are quite identical to other disease.
Peritoneal mesothelioma represents 15 percent of all mesothelioma cases. Some of the common symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are fever and anemia, which are tough to diagnose. If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, it is advisable that you consult your health care provider immediately. Some experts think of mesothelioma as a lung cancer but the fact of the matter is that it affects organ membranes that are there around the lung portion. When suffering from mesothelioma, you are not going to find any early symptoms. However, you may experience constant cough and chest pain.
